Core Values
I believe every professional has a set of "core values" that define their careers - I have mine and these are listed below.
Client Focused Attitude
I can't stress enough on the importance of having an unflinching client focused attitude. It is imperative that all my actions as a professional consultant are aimed at providing a measurable benefit to my clients. Clients can be internal (Investment Advisors, Fund Managers) or external (Investors, broker/dealers) - the focus should always remain on their requirements. The most cutting edge application that doesn't satisfy its stake-holders is just a demo.
Business Value of Technology
I believe that enterprise technology is about the enterprise first, with technology as a distant second. Instead of going for the newest/brightest technology, a professional should recommend and use what makes sense for the business. Sometimes, just making it work is more important than having a perfect solution.
Relationships
One of the most important traits of a professional consultant is his ability and willingness to forge lasting relationships - not only with the clients and stake-holders, but also with team-members, management, external vendors, and all those who may have an impact on the venture.
